In the documentation I found that the perfect image size for the category pictures is 582x374px.
But it seems that a very light space is not visible.

It depends on the columns number. I have tested local site and played with columns param. Have a look:
Two columns:
Three columns:
As you can see, the result differs in each case, so it is because of a responsive layout. So, it is all individual.
I recommend to experiment with the image and change its height and width to get an optimal size for your needs or just use such kind of images which looks fine with different size.
